You may experience a few (or many) detoxification symptoms, including intense cravings, headaches, and fatigue. Why? You probably removed a lot of toxins from your diet. Dairy (which is more toxic to some than others)Since you’ve probably been eating these things your whole life, your body is going through some serious withdrawal. Gluten behaves like an opiate, and when we remove it from our diet, we can have actual withdrawals! The average human carries two to six pounds of bacteria in their body, which is somewhere around 1. When we don’t feed the bad bacteria the sugar they need to stay alive, they can (and do) make our cravings worse, at least for awhile. The cravings and irritability that we experience when we cut sugar from our diet (especially if our intake is reduced drastically) can be intense, and may also be largely influenced by the types of bacteria that we are hosting.(Read this: How to Choose the Right Probiotic)Burning Fat for Fuel. Another reason people feel lousy when they first start Paleo, is because on a cellular level, your mitochondria are learning to burn more fat for fuel. That is, your body is shifting away from using glucose (from carbs and protein) as its primary fuel source, towards using more ketones from fats. Be patient with your body (and your mitochondria!) because it can take several weeks for this transition to happen. If you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your gut, which you may not even be aware of, you might experience symptoms of bacterial/yeast “die- off” when you drastically reduce your carb intake. This creates a transient toxic state in the body otherwise known as the Herxheimer reaction (also known as “die- off”) which is thought to happen when toxins from the dying pathogens overwhelm the body’s ability to clear them out. It is likely the bad bacteria in your body screaming to stay alive. Fight through it and these feelings will pass. In the beginning, it’s also helpful to think of the Paleo diet as a cleanse, a detox, or a purging of sorts. Your body is finally getting a chance to clean out those built up toxins! This purging is exactly what causes the symptoms you may be experiencing right now—the toxins are in your circulation being dealt with, instead of being suppressed. It’s like when you do a good deep cleaning of your house. You turn it upside down before it looks immaculate. Support your Detox Organs with Paleo Foods. The major organs of detoxification are the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and skin. If any one of these systems is sluggish, it can lead to a buildup of toxic chemicals that act as free radicals and can damage cells throughout the body. For dinner I do riced cauliflower topped with a stir fry of zucchini, roasted carrots, and bell peppers with light soy sauce (cheating). I snack on baked spinach chips. Today was ok. Day 3– Today you eat fruits AND veggies (except bananas, corn and other starchy veggies) You also don’t get a potato today, sucks! I just do a repeat of day one and two for my foods. Day 4- Today you eat only bananas and milk/yogurt. This is the DUMBEST day by far. You can only have bananas and milk or unsweetened yogurt. Boooooo, but let’s make the best of it! For breakfast I do a banana smoothie made with bananas, almond milk and greek yogurt. For lunch I eat cabbage soup. For dinner I do another large banana smoothie and more cabbage soup. I make banana ice cream, by freezing banana slices and then blending them. I also eat some dried banana chips. I had no problems with this day since I love meat and was happy to get it! I made turkey sausage patties for breakfast topped with tomatoes. Day 6- Today it’s protein and veggies- Unlike yesterday you can have other veggies besides tomatoes. I had turkey sausage and roasted veggies for breakfast. For lunch I had a stir- fry with chicken and veggies (so good) I had a spaghetti squash with tomato sauce and ground turkey for dinner. Spaghetti squash is off limits (starchy) but I had to have it! I hated this day because I wanted more meat, but I was glad it was the last day. The scale says I’m 7 pounds lighter this morning so that was great to see. I feel clean inside. I’m hungry today though. REALLY HUNGRY! For breakfast I make a huge fruit and veggie smoothie using spinach, apples, oranges, grapes and water. It was so good and sweet! Kept me full until lunch! Some calcium- oxalate stone formers are prescribed potassium- citrate tablets which are also effective at reducing stones. But is the average vegan at a higher or lower risk? Vegan diets are higher in some elements that increase the risk of stones, lower in some, and higher in some things that prevent stones, so it is hard to say. The story regarding oxalate does not end with kidney stones. There is currently an entire community built around the idea that absorbing too much oxalate, known as enteric hyperoxaluria, either causes or exacerbates many diseases such as fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, depression, arthritis, autism, and a variety of digestive disorders (which, in turn, exacerbate hyperoxaluria by allowing even more oxalate to be absorbed). According to Low. Oxalate. info, leaky gut syndrome, in which molecules are absorbed from the digestive tract at a higher than normal rate, can cause hyperoxaluria. They also say that you cannot rely on getting a kidney stone as a warning sign before oxalate accumulates in other tissues.
